How to Guide for a Community Food Forest

This handbook is designed to help you build a micro food forest tied to your community. It is the culmination of a program put together by the Cowichan Green Community to design a community food forest on a steep, underutilized space around their urban building.

Overview

From Javan

Hey folks,

These are my good friends and colleagues Gord Hiebert and Jana Mcnab, that's them up top looking very serious as they confir on the next planting (see what I did there?). Now I've worked and taught with them and I think for folks who are in just changing their mindset to permaculture and are looking for instructors that incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and still live like the majority of people do, you've found the right instructors.

Here's a bit of there adcopy before for their upcoming Permaculture Design Certificate that I'll be teaching Holistic Management and Life Design in.

Be fruitful and mulch apply,

Welcome, thanks for choosing to learn more about our 2016 Permaculture Design Certificate Program.

Before we get started we have some questions for you:

Are you ready to see the world in a whole new way?

Are you tired of feeling powerless when you hear about all the problems in the world? Do you want to know how to solve them?

Do you love the natural world and want to further understand how designed ecologies can create an abundant future?

Do you have a love of design and want to realize its potential to create productive, efficient systems?

Are you looking to break away from the confines of a typical 9am – 5pm job and explore the freedom the world of Regenerative Entrepreneurism can offer?

If you answered YES to any of these questions,

then this program is for you!

Sustainability is gaining acceptance in our society, there is a positive trend towards individuals, organizations and governments adopting more sustainable practices.

Individuals are installing solar panels, reducing water consumption through efficient irrigation and growing home gardens. Organizations, entrepreneurs and non-profits are adopting socially conscious models that focus beyond a ‘Profit Only’ model to a ‘Triple Bottom Line’ model of People, Planet and Profit. Finally, governments are admitting we only have ONE earth and we need to protect its natural assets.

While all of this is well and good we are still not addressing the biggest problems facing our planet such as:

  • Unpredictable weather events
  • Depleted water sources (aquifers, glaciers and waterways drying up)
  • Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)
  • Pollution of our watersheds
  • Increasing energy demand and consumption of goods
  • Unequal distribution of food… The list goes on.

Permaculture Design = Regenerative Design

What we need is a new lens to view these problems. We need to approach them from a different perspective. Our society needs to move BEYOND SUSTAINABILITY. The key to do this is Regenerative Design.

  • a holistic design frameworks that uses proven traditional knowledge and practices with present day research and appropriate technologies
  • a Planet First ethical approach to finding Simple Solutions to major worldwide problems
  • a collaborative and inclusive approach that crosses cultural and religious barriers
  • long-term, multigenerational thinking producing positive local actions

Permaculture (‘permanent agriculture’ & ‘permanent culture’) began as a design system for creating self-sufficient communities and homesteads through sustainable food production systems based on natural ecologies. Over the past 50 years, the design principles have proven so effective and universally applicable they are now being applied to new areas such as:

  • home design (Living Building Challenge)
  • communities (Transition Towns)
  • businesses (Regenerative Enterprises)
  • financial systems (Permaculture Credit Unions, Barter System)
  • ecosystem restoration and more…

This is only the tip of the iceberg.
