ReFarmers OrganizerDocumentary, Facing FireI hosted an outdoor documentary movie night as part of a free series of events called Neighbourhood Food Week which took place in public parks, community centres, plazas and streets in our Vancouver community. I wanted to show nature and food related short films which would inspire people and be educational at the same time. Facing Fire not only gives a fresh perspective on forest fire history and prevention but also sheds a much needed Indigenous light on the colonial “war again fire”. The film explores innovative ways of relating to fire as a natural part of existence and spectators left feeling optimistic, challenged and invigorated. Everybody who watches this film comes away with a newfound sense of awe and discovery and immediately wants to tell every one they know about it! It’s life-changing.

American Journalist - CNNDocumentary, Facing FireJust had a chance to watch your doc over coffee and color me impressed! It is beautifully shot, full of compelling characters and brims with such smart information and ideas. Love the line that we need to change ‘the climate between our ears!’
I think it should be mandatory viewing for every homeowners association meeting in the American West.

Occupational Therapist Specializing with special needs children - New York, USADocumentary, Facing FireThe Facing Fire documentary was enlightening, heartfelt & highly educational. For the first time, I finally heard a sound and readily available solution for the dangerous wildfires that have been plaguing our forests for years. Most importantly, Javan offers us as the viewer an opportunity to change our relationship with fire from a fearing one to a collaborative one.
In this documentary he interviews some of the Native American Indians and invites us as a society to draw upon their ancient wisdom and embrace their unique perspective. The perspective of bringing controlled and conscious small fires into our local communities all over the world guided by ancient wisdom. I am deeply inspired by Javan’s mission and since I work with children and families my first thought is to bring this documentary to the younger generation and show this in every classroom all over the world.

Natural Product ExpertDocumentary, Facing FireOh my goodness Javan- just watched your film. What a magnificent job you did on a really difficult subject. Our fire department has such a difficult time selling the idea of prescribed fire in the community – you’ve done a great job helping provide a different point of view.

Documentary, Facing FireAs a concerned citizen i just want to personally thank you for making this documentary AND making it freely available.
As a dutch person living below sea level and seeing all those forests go up in smoke its really heartwarming that someone with the knowledge, experience and intelligence making such a wonderful documentary. Hopefully it will be picked up by those most in need.
I have just started with permaculture, and especially Yeomans work, and seeing it applied to forestfires is common sense isnt it?
Documentary, Facing FireInterested in what we can do to work with, rather than against, fire? This fantastic documentary highlights who, how and why there is a shift towards controlled burning to reduce catastrophic burning… and controlled burns aren’t that scary at all. Major kudos to Javan Kerby Bernakevitch for producing this – it’s timely, necessary and thought-provoking. May it keep the conversation going! Embrace the flames, my friends ?
